Going through a bunch of places myself, I understand importance of financial support during the mentored/educational part of your career. Actually, I think I never paid myself to get and education. In Russia, the higher education is compulsory and free if one passes a certain admittance level. Past that, I was lucky to receive a scholarship from Erasmus Mundus Masters program on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, supporting my European MSc. EMM NANO has a special place in my heart, and I strongly encourage anyone to apply there. I did my PhD then in Germany, where it is considered an entirely research & work position, for which one is actually getting paid for.
